First get a journal, post it notes, and pen. Your journal will be a place for recording notes. Use the post-it notes as dividers for topics (see the attached document). You can also take the post-it notes with you everywhere you go and write down ideas when they strike. Then, bring them back home and stick them in your journal. No rewriting necessary! Make your journal your own! Get creative with it! Post your pictures here if you'd like to share. View the finished thing here: drive.google.com/file/d/0B4aCWQ0EavUxMDdtVmRXejQ2ZUE/edit?usp=sharing

At the moment all of my notes are in one journal, because they're brainstorming notes and I'm just writing things as they come to me. I'm planning to buy multicolored note cards and break down the notes onto the cards, to sort out the details I want to keep and ones I've decided against as the brainstorming progressed. I'm gonna need a card box though.

I'm currently using Microsoft's OneNote. It's similar, except it's all tech based and in THE CLOUD (if you set it up that way).

I love the many ways you can plan for a novel! I love hearing about others' methods.

I've never used note cards before...but I've made so many brainstorming notes that I thought it might be a useful way to pick out the details I want to keep and condense them into one place. We'll see how it goes. I thought about doing the notes on the computer, but I find I brainstorm better by writing by hand on paper than I do typing. I think the typing tends to make it look to 'set' and 'final' to me to be brainstorming, lol

And you can use it across multiple devices (if you save in THE CLOUD) EXACTLY! I can work on it on my laptop OR my tablet (phone is kind of small). Makes it great for late night brainstorms! I don't have to get up and go to my computer or even turn on a light!
