It's sometimes hard to separate the annoying doubt in our heads vs how we really feel. I know I struggle with that so often. A little exercise on that is to simply write yourself a letter (a nice one!) and give yourself encouragement.
Let's do that for our future November selves. Whenever we're struggling we can come back here and read the supportiveness of ourselves! This might be just what you need come November.

Dear Mel,
I know you've been struggling lately with writing. It's been a rough road these past couple of years and frankly you are super brave. I hope you know how proud of you I am. You've fought hard. HARD. There were times I didn't even think you'd make it but you did and you did because you're a fighter and a survivor. Even more than that, friend, you are a conqueror.
November has always been a great month for you. Besides the fact it's Thanksgiving and your birthday and the unofficial start of CHRISTMAS, it's also NaNo. Nano saved you, Mel. Years ago when things were dark and bleak, it saved you. Sprints and this writing community saved you too. November can be a time of restart - a change to tackle this writing thing and DO IT UP RIGHT. You can write, a little, every day. Look, I don't expect you to hit 50k this time around. It's not like you've been training. No Olympian goes out there and gold medals without practice first. But you know what you can do? You can finish. You can write SOMETHING every day and take a deep breath and do it.
Do it.
You know what, I believe in you. I do. I think this is your time to finally face this and kick its butt. You can do this. I know you can.
I'm going to cheering for you SO STINKIN hard and I know you're going to do this.
I believe in you.
Love,
You

Dear Lis,
Another month of insanity begins soon. I know you're struggling with ideas, that fog of depression from your recent lose, and your stubborn husband who seems to think the way to motivate you is to give you even more to do. But we both know you can do this. Do not give up before it begins. Do not give up a week, two weeks, or three weeks in. You've got plenty of stories and characters to work with and they'll all come tumbling out of the woodwork as you begin writing. That's how it always works. You just need to START. Who cares if every word you write sucks? Who cares if you can't string two coherent thoughts together some times? That's what this NaNo thing is all about! Maybe this year you can add your own NaNo-ism to one of your favorite NaNo-related joys: the great NaNo-ism thread!
I know your wondering what's the point? You've tried ten years and only succeeded once in hitting 50K. The thing is... you've got a lot more going for you this year. You've got something important to write for and you can't let them down! So, when you're feeling down and ready to throw in the towel... ask yourself this one question: Who have you dedicated this year's success to? When the month is over and you're editing and formatting and all that good stuff, whose name is going to be listed on that "Dedication" page? Mom. The one person who understood your craziness throughout your entire life, the one person who encourage your creative mind even if it was sometimes dark and disturbing, the one person who was always willing to be your sound board when you were working through a plot problem. Mom. This is for her. This is in memory of her. You can't let that go. You can't give up on it.
You've got this. At times, it will feel like that Great Wall of Writer's Block is in the way, but you know where that wrecking ball is. Get to breaking down that wall and write your heart out! I know you can do this. Mom knew you could do this. Don't let yourself or her down!
Love,
You

Dear Steph,
The whirlwind of writing began almost 9 hours ago and you just started writing about 20 minutes ago, which is perfectly fine. There will be days you write very little(or not at all) but we both know that there are those days that come out of nowhere and you down 5-9k in a few hours! It is possible, you've done it. Your novel is getting worked on and that's amazing. I have confidence that an ending for the novel is just under the surface and you can find it, you just have to write to uncover it!
Now a couple of things: don't forget to eat/drink/take care of yourself, because a hungry/thirsty/stinky writer is generally not a happy writer! Also, don't forget about hubs and baby girl, because you know if you don't get the poopy diapers no one will and the apartment won't tidy itself. Lastly, don't let the writer's block worry you! It happens! You can get past it with the wonderful Novel Quilting you did and the prompts found during the workshop. You can do this, you've done it before.
Good luck and see you at the finish line!!
*hugs*
You
