So, I'm just wondering - how soon is too soon to start planning your Nano novel? What is your opinion?

I start planning as soon as it ends!

I'm wondering if starting the planning process now would make me more successful this year. (I hit 50k last year, but I didn't finish the novel. So, this year's goal is to actually finish a novel during Nano.)

I've found some planning is good, but too much can cause a block. :/ it's a fine balance.

I'm with Cloud. I start planning early on, but I try not to over plan because if I do by the time NaNo rolls around I'm bored with the story. Then again, I've only completed NaNo once and that was a seat-of-my-pants series of character interviews. Maybe I should write my next NaNo that way... kind of like Interview with the Vampire.

That sounds like an interesting way to write!
I'm thinking of doing my fantasy story this November. I wrote the back story last year to help get my thoughts organized. I was thinking if I start fleshing out the world building details now, then I can focus on writing then!

I've found that the earlier I start to plan, the sooner I get burned out in November. The first year I won, I had no plans, minus it was a bit of fan-fiction (which strayed way away from that). I need to plan more this year, though. I'm not sure WHAT I'm doing it about, but I want to do a D&D-based (set in Faerun for anyone knows D&D ), but ugh, can't start TOO early.

I usually start planning around the end of September or beginning of October. Unless I'm doing a sequel, of course, in which case I pretty much start planning before I begin the first one. I've discovered that I do well with a loose outline and more characters than I'll likely need. I usually end up going off-plan, creating new characters on the fly, and never using some of the planned ones. The end result is always better than planned, though. I always like to refer to my first NaNo, when my characters did an unplanned kidnapping and completely changed the last quarter of the book. It was amazing. If I finish editing what I'm working on before October, I'll do the next in the series. If not... eh, I'll find something. I started planning last year's novel partway through October, and it managed to be both the best and longest first draft I've done in my... uh... six years? Yeah, six years of NaNo. Oddly enough, that one mostly stuck to the outline. There was a random murder of a major character that shook things up, but it was otherwise pretty close.

If it's something I really want to do, and have been planning for a while, I usually start planning in mid-July. September is my absolute latest.
One year I started planning in late-September/early-October. That was the year I got my highest wordcount, so I don't know if planning super-early ever actually helped.

Lately I haven't had any new ideas so I fear this nano will be another flop. Perhaps I can try to rehash one of my old ideas and put a twist on it. Or just continue with adding short stories until I run out or an idea actually comes to me.

I have an idea and I am probably going to sketch out what it is about before Nano since I would LOVE to be able to say that I started and ACTUALLY finished a novel in a month I've done the reach 50K the first and second time with the second time getting to more of an ending. But third time is the charm!
